My take on it:
My kids are ages 12 and 16 and love playing with building kits. Especially my son, who is gets really involved in projects. I was excited to see what they'd make with this Winches set.
It started with me just getting the kit for them and I jumped in to help/play too. The kit provides you with the gears, rods, connectors, wheels and other parts. They do have a couple step-by-step instructions and you can make your own creations.
We started out with the first kit in the instructions, the tow truck. We only needed to include the box, which was a popcorn box in the instructions. We used a shake n bake box which the dimensions were a little off. We followed the instructions and my children were able to follow along easily. It presented challenges, but nothing they couldn't handle. I like how it made them not only follow directions, but also think about how each gear fits together and how to make each piece work together to get our tow truck to work properly.
It wasn't perfect by any means, but in the end, the wheels rolled and our tow winch operated like it was supposed to. Now, they get to tackle the other projects.
It really was a lot of fun and it kept the kids interested and engaged. You can see our creation here.
